AI visibility reporting: keep observations and outcomes apart
Build an AI visibility report that separates sampled answers, website activity and business outcomes. Clear definitions make the next decision more useful.
An AI visibility report needs to explain what was observed before it asks the reader to judge progress. A brand appearing in a response, a customer visiting the site and a qualified enquiry are three different signals. Keeping them separate makes the report more useful.
Record the observation method
Agree the customer questions, platforms, language and market. Capture the date, wording and relevant conditions of each observation. A repeat check needs that context to support a meaningful comparison. A single answer is one sample, not a measure of every person’s discovery journey.
Describe answers and sources directly
Record whether the business appeared, how it was described and which information was cited. Explain the information gap the observation raises. Could a buyer understand the service? Is the description accurate? Does the cited page provide enough evidence to help someone evaluate it?
Check what the platform actually reports
Use the reporting available in the relevant product and document its definitions. Google’s current website guidance describes AI-feature appearances within Search Console’s overall Web performance data. Do not assume that a bespoke AI-answer sample and the platform’s traffic reporting represent the same population or measure.
Connect customer actions without inventing a causal link
Review website actions and business outcomes alongside the search context, with the measurement method stated. Attribution allocates credit within a model; it does not make every association causal. If the data cannot isolate a particular discovery experience, say so rather than assign a value to it.
Close with an information decision
A useful report might recommend clarifying a service explanation, improving the evidence on a page or checking a technical barrier. Record the owner and the question for the next review. The point is to improve the information customers can use, while keeping the evidence honest.
