SEO and paid search need a shared plan
Different channels can have different jobs. They still need a shared understanding of the customer and the commercial goal.
SEO and paid search are often planned in separate documents, reviewed in separate meetings and judged against separate targets. Some separation is useful. A lack of shared context is not.
Agree the customer and the objective
Start with the products, services and customer needs the business wants to grow. Both channels should understand the commercial priorities, the language customers use and what a useful enquiry or sale looks like.
Give each channel a clear role
Paid activity may be useful for testing messages or reaching demand around a specific offer. Organic work may involve improving the pages and information that support longer-term discovery. The right balance depends on the business, the website and the resources available.
Share what you learn
Search terms, customer questions and landing-page observations can inform a wider content plan. Organic research can also expose gaps worth considering in paid activity. Treat those findings as evidence to evaluate, rather than automatic instructions to increase a budget.
Review the whole journey
A customer may encounter your business more than once before making a decision. Review channel results with that context and be clear about what your measurement can and cannot show.
A shared plan does not mean making every channel do the same job. It means making the individual decisions with a better view of the business they are meant to support.
