A better technical SEO brief starts with better questions
Google’s new learning playlists are a useful reminder: technical search work becomes more valuable when the whole team understands the problem it solves.
A technical audit can be thorough and still fail to move a business forward. The gap is often between finding issues and explaining which changes deserve the team’s attention.
A useful resource for shared understanding
Google published two new Search Central learning paths on 6 October 2026. One covers search fundamentals. The other focuses on technical SEO topics including crawling, indexing and rendering. They provide a structured starting point for teams building a shared understanding of how search works.
Ask what is happening before prescribing a fix
A useful brief names the behaviour the team has observed. Important product pages may be difficult to reach through internal links. A service page may not be indexed as expected. Several URLs may compete to represent the same content. Those are more actionable starting points than a list of unexplained audit labels.
Show an example. Explain the customer or commercial role of the affected page. Record what is known and what needs checking. This makes it easier for developers, content teams and business owners to contribute to the diagnosis.
Give implementation a clear shape
- Problem: describe the observed behaviour and the evidence behind it.
- Priority: explain the impact and why the work matters now.
- Change: define the proposed fix and its dependencies.
- Validation: agree how the team will confirm the change behaves as intended.
Keep symptoms and causes separate. A report can flag a pattern without explaining its origin. The investigation should establish whether the issue is a template, a content decision, a publishing process or something else before a large change is commissioned.
Close the loop
After implementation, check the relevant URLs and record the result. Some changes can be validated directly; search performance needs an appropriate review window and context. A clear technical roadmap makes those differences understandable, so the next decision is based on what the team has learned.
